I've read a lot of horse and horse-related books over the years, and more often than not I've been disappointed. This is not one of those times!The writing is clear and interesting. The characters are all smart and going about their lives in ways that make sense to them. The horse action is realistic, detailed, and appropriate. There is no artificial peril driving the plot - no stalkers, no crazed rattlesnakes forcing an artificial hero/heroine rescue - just the normal everyday peril of working with horses and the people around horses.
Lizzy's situation is a little charmed ... she certainly is in the right place at the right time with the right people ... but she pays for it some, too. Time feels a little compressed, in that she gets opportunities maybe too quickly, but that's a small quibble. I appreciated that her situation showed both the highs and lows of being a working student, done right... you work long, hard, and it's not always fair... but there are also amazing opportunities, when the mentor is looking out for her students. That everyone who is nice to you still has their own agenda more important that yours is also clear.
The details of riding and caring for horses are all very accurate, and very natural. I don't think they'd bother someone who wasn't a horseman, but as a horseman, I kept getting jazzed to go out and ride while I was reading it. That's a special experience from a book.
I really liked it and can't wait to read more in this series. I would say it's appropriate for ages 12 & up in terms of content.

I am 60+ years old and have owned horses for 50+ years, have read every horse book I could get my hands on throughout my life, and I LOVE this book! It is "as good as it gets" in realistic, horse-related fiction. Yes, the situation is idealized in some respects, and the time it all takes is somewhat compressed, but that is true of most fiction, whether in books, movies or TV. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is at all interested in horses and dressage. I laughed, cried, & read it "non-stop" & at the end I wanted more. So glad this is a series!
I loved this whole series. I am a low level, beginner dressage rider at age 50 and ate every bit of these stories up, even though some of the settings are a bit foreign. Like all fiction, there is a certain required suspension of disbelief, so some of what I found to be unrealistic I accepted as part of the story telling process. Lizzy is a heroine I could identify well enough with to genuinely enjoy her adventures, though she made me cringe with sometimes. Which probably tells me that I like her more than I realized lol.
Thank you, author, for giving me some fun stories to read with horses and dressage as central to the plot. I got some tidbits from the stories that have helped me in my riding. It doesn't get much better than that.
I just finished book 3 of this series, and am about to read the final book. My review of the first book is that it was good enough to get me completely hooked and I have gobbled up the other two books. That said, this first book is my least favorite of the three I've read......but I think the writer was truly finding her voice as a writer. Some of the adventures were a bit implausible to me (as a rider - can't imagine being a first level rider and then being able to do fancy moves as part of a quadrille team), but I thoroughly enjoyed the read nonetheless. The biggest compliment I can is that as a SERIES of books, I have learned so much about riding. I have describe this series to friends as "riding self help wrapped up in light fiction which somehow makes it way more accessible".....I have many a dog-eared page that describes training techniques, or "ah-ha" moments of the riders! I highly recommend!
First, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can't wait for the sequel. It's simply written, but that's not a bad thing at all.The author is a good storyteller with a sense of humor. Still, I think the five star reviews are a bit overblown. The characters are somewhat stereotypical and predictable. Lizzy and Margot are just a little too nice, Margot's rich sponsor is a little too mean. The horses also seem somewhat generic. There are no memorable horse characters like Justa Bob in Jane Smiley's Horse Heaven, or QL in Barbara Moss's In and Out, or any of the quirky horses in Jilly Cooper's novels. I'm also a bit surprised that some reviewers find Lizzy's experiences to be realistic. Do working students really get to do tempis on the trainer's FEI mount on their very first lesson when they've never done a flying change before? While this review may come across as negative, I try to be brutally honest and fair in all my reviews. This is a fun read, but I think it would have been better with human and horse characters that had a little more soul.
